Understanding Umrah for Muslims in Singapore
Umrah, often referred to as the lesser pilgrimage, is a deeply spiritual journey that Muslims perform in the holy city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia. While Hajj is compulsory once in a lifetime for those who are able, Umrah is not obligatory but strongly encouraged in Islam. The Meaning of Umrah
Linguistically, the word Umrah means “to visit a populated place.” Juridically, it refers to an act of worship that begins with entering the sacred state of Ihram, performing Tawaf around the Ka’bah, walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah (Sa’ie), and concluding with shaving or cutting the hair (Tahallul).
Although the Quran does not make Umrah compulsory, it is highly recommended for all Muslims who are able to perform it, as it brings immense blessings and spiritual closeness to Allah SWT.
